Dyslexia Assessments

The symptoms of dyslexia are different in every case, but often include:

- poor spelling
- difficulty reading
- confusion with left and right, before and after
- letter reversal
- poor handwriting
- poor short-term memory
- confusion between sounds in words
- difficulties in organisation and time keeping

Undiagnosed dyslexia can cause serious harm, particularly to children of school age. Poor performance in reading and writing tasks is often attributed to 'being stupid' or 'being lazy' - when often the opposite is the case. This can lead to problems with bullying and low self-esteem that can last into adulthood.

A central characteristic of dyslexia is that there is often a huge difference between a child's aptitude in oral tasks, compared to their achievement in reading and writing tasks.

Once diagnosed, and with proper support, people with dyslexia are able to take steps to improve their performance in reading and writing tasks.

Many dyslexics have gone on to live incredibly successful and creative lives, including Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein and Steve Jobs, the founder of Apple.

Dyslexia Assessment

Dyslexia assessment takes the form of a comprehensive test of reading, spelling, memory, verbal and spatial skills that may last several hours, and is usually followed by a detailed report containing personalised recommendations. If a dyslexia screening test has shown that a person is at risk of dyslexia, then a thorough dyslexia assessment is often recommended.

Dyslexia Assessment - Children

Dyslexia assessment for children can often come as a great relief. This is because it provides an underlying reason for lower-than-expected achievement, and because it offers a roadmap for future success.

A positive diagnosis of dyslexia can also form a basis for requesting extra support from schools, and for requesting concessions from exam boards such as extra time in exams.

Dyslexia Assessment - Adults

Dyslexia assessment for adults can also be very beneficial, as it can help explain a lifelong pattern of struggling with reading and writing, and can greatly boost your self-esteem and confidence.

It is never too late to diagnose dyslexia, and many adults have subsequently gone on to enjoy further education or better career prospects in later life.
